For international flights from the US, the time to book depends most on when you travel. Trips in peak periods, such as summer, the December holidays and major festivals at your destination, sell their lower fare levels first, so book those as early as your plans allow. For off-peak trips you usually have more flexibility, but waiting until the last few weeks tends to leave fewer seats and higher fares.

How far ahead airlines sell seats
Most airlines open their schedules roughly 11 months before departure. Fares are sold in levels (fare buckets): when the lower levels on a flight sell out, the next price up is what you see. That is why flights in busy periods rise steadily as departure approaches, while quiet flights may stay flat for months.
Booking timing by type of trip
| Trip | Suggested approach |
|---|---|
| Summer to Europe | Book early; transatlantic summer demand is high |
| December holidays, any region | Book as soon as dates are fixed; peak dates sell out first |
| Festival and family travel (Diwali, Lunar New Year, Christmas in Manila) | Book early; demand from the US diaspora is concentrated on a few weeks |
| Off-peak trips (for example January–March to Europe) | More flexibility; compare a range of dates |
| Business or short-notice travel | Expect higher fares; compare nearby airports and one-stop options |
What moves the price more than the booking day
- Travel dates. Mid-week departures and returns are often priced lower than weekends.
- Airports. Compare all airports in your city, such as JFK and Newark, or LAX and nearby alternatives.
- Nonstop vs one stop. One-stop itineraries can be priced lower but take longer.
- Trip type. A open-jaw ticket or multi-city itinerary can cost about the same as a round trip while saving a backtrack.
- One-way vs round-trip. On many international routes a round trip is priced better; see one-way vs round-trip.
Before you book: documents
Check passport validity (many countries require six months beyond your stay), visas, and travel authorizations such as the UK ETA before paying. The US State Department lists entry rules by country.

Frequently asked questions
Is there a best day of the week to book flights?
Fares depend on seat availability on the flight, not the day you search. Focus on travel dates and booking early for busy periods.
Do fares drop close to departure?
Sometimes on quiet flights, but on busy routes and peak dates they usually rise as cheaper fare levels sell out.
Should I book a refundable fare if my plans may change?
If plans are uncertain, compare the cost of a flexible fare against the change fees and fare difference on a cheaper fare.
