How booking works, step by step
Every booking follows the same four steps, whether it is a one-way, round-trip or multi-city trip.
- Search — enter departure and arrival airports (or a city to include all its airports), travel dates, number of travelers and cabin.
- Choose an offer — compare airline, total travel time, stops, layover length, included baggage, and whether the fare can be changed or refunded.
- Enter traveler details — full name as on the passport, date of birth, and contact details. International trips may require passport details before departure.
- Pay and confirm — review the total and the fare rules, pay, and receive your confirmation email with the airline reference.
What the price includes
The total shown before payment covers everything charged for that booking. Here is how it breaks down:
| Part of the price | Who sets it | Shown when |
|---|---|---|
| Airline fare | The airline | On every offer |
| Taxes and government fees | Governments and airports | Included in the offer total |
| Carrier-imposed charges | The airline | Included in the offer total |
| Checked bags, seat selection | The airline | Listed on the offer; paid extras shown before payment |
| GoodForOneFare service fee (if any) | GoodForOneFare | As a separate line before payment |
We do not add charges after you pay. If a price changes before you complete payment because the airline updated the offer, you see the new price and decide whether to continue.
Fare rules: changes, cancellations and refunds
Whether you can change or cancel depends on the fare you buy, and every offer shows it before you book. Basic fares are often non-changeable; standard and flexible fares allow changes with a fare difference and sometimes a fee.
If the airline cancels or significantly changes a flight to or from the United States and you do not accept the alternative, you are entitled to a refund under US Department of Transportation rules. See the DOT Aviation Consumer Protection site and our refund policy.
Names, passports and travel documents
The name on the ticket must match the passport used to travel. Middle names and suffixes matter for some airlines. You are responsible for passports, visas and entry requirements; check the destination’s rules on the US State Department travel site before you book.
Choose your trip type
- One-way flights — a single direction, with no return booked.
- Multi-city flights — two or more cities on one itinerary.
- Flight routes — route guides for popular trips from the US.
